History

The International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC) is the world's largest shooting sport association within practical shooting. Founded in May 1976 in Missouri, USA, with Jeff Cooper as the first president.

The sport originated in California in the 1950s, initially for developing defensive handgun skills, but quickly evolved into a pure sport. The IPSC motto is: Diligentia, Vis, Celeritas (DVC) – Latin for "accuracy, power, speed".

Today, over 100 active IPSC regions operate worldwide. Competitors shoot with pistols, rifles, and shotguns across various divisions.

Detailed Rules

Handgun Divisions: Open (optics, compensators allowed), Standard (fits IPSC box), Production (factory pistols, 15 rounds), Classic (1911 style), Revolver, Production Optics.

Scoring: Comstock method – points divided by time = hit factor. Target zones: A (5 pts), C (3-4), D (1-2). Highest hit factor wins.

Power Factor: Minor (125 kgr·ft/s) or Major (160-170 kgr·ft/s). Major scoring gives more points for C and D zone hits.

Stage Types: Short (up to 12 rounds), Medium (up to 24), Long (up to 32 rounds for handgun).
