Steel Challenge was founded in 1981 by Mike Dalton and Mike Fichman to determine the fastest and most accurate shooter. The format consists of eight standardized stages with steel targets that are identical worldwide.
The Steel Challenge World Speed Shooting Championship has grown to one of the largest professional pistol competitions in America. In 2007, the competition had a total prize pool of $390,000 .
European Championships have been held since 2003. In winter 2007, Dalton and Fichman sold the rights to USPSA (the US sanctioning body of IPSC).
