Olympic and ISSF sport rifle events: 10 m air rifle, 50 m three-position, 50 m prone and 300 m free rifle.
Sport rifle shooting is one of the oldest Olympic events — three rifle disciplines were held at the 1896 Athens Games . Hungary has been an active participant in international rifle competitions since the early 1900s.
ISSF rifle events are traditionally among the most precise shooting disciplines. In the 50 m three-position event (3×40 shots: prone, standing, kneeling) and 10 m air rifle , the world's most accurate athletes are rewarded.
Notable figures in Hungarian sport rifle include regular European Championship appearances by the national team. Since the 2000s, Hungarian air rifle and smallbore teams have steadily improved in international rankings.
300 m free rifle events feature in World and European Championship programmes — one of Europe's most tradition-rich long-range disciplines. Several Hungarian ranges are suitable for 300 m shooting.
In 2018 the ISSF reformed the programme: the standalone 50 m prone (60 shots) Olympic event was discontinued, and the 50 m three-position format was adjusted (ultimately the 3×40 format was reinstated).
